#NoBystanders -- Would you? Will you?

I found this brilliant video on Upworthy. Maybe you've already seen it. Maybe it's old news. But it's worth sharing, and saving on the blog.

So. Are you a bystander? I know I am--but I won't be anymore. You?

  1. I'm long away from the school or kid scene so I haven't encountered anyone (adults) saying anything like this to other people. These days you risk getting assaulted if you tell another adult, and a stranger no less, not to do or say something. But I would speak up if I overheard a kid/teen saying something like that.

  2. I was driving home past a small, neighborhood park and saw some kids rough housing. One of the kids was smaller and seemed to be getting the worst of it. So I stopped and asked, "Are you guys all right?" They immediately stopped, grinned, and say they were OK. But this is a much smaller setting than the city scenes this video showed. The video makes me think those kids in the opening scenes are reflecting what they hear from their parents. Yes, we have to speak up. I'm too old to be a bystander!

  3. I don't think I've heard anyone saying those things on the street--but kids are definitely mean to each other. And at that age, it's hard to be the person who speaks up and stops it. I think someone has to speak up and tell children it's wrong to say (and even THINK) those things or children grow up to be adults who don't know any better.

  4. Zero Tolerance is the only answer to any form of abuse (deed/word/thought) of any kind. Incidentally, Zero Tolerance is the topic of my 30th April A-Z 2014 post!

  5. What I find interesting about this is that it's those who are bullied that become bullies out of anger and frustration at being treated badly themselves. It's a vicious circle but it can be stopped by treating anger with compassion. Well, that's my take on it anyway.
    Thanks for posting it. :-)
